Rules Round up

Welcome to the LOP Bocce Rules Round-up!

Do you have a question on a rule? Do you need clarification? Ask Us!
Here are a few of the rules that may have been misheard or not understood.

Throwing Bocce Balls

Does a player throw both their balls? Do they alternate with their partner?
Although not specifically stated in our current version of the rules, it is Implied but not stated:
there are three possible ways that two teammates can throw legally in a frame.

1. Each thrower throws 2 consecutive balls (one two, one two)
2. Both players throw their balls alternatively (one, one, one, one)
3. First thrower, throws one ball, followed by next player throws 2 balls; the original thrower throws their final ball. (one, one-two, one)
Persons with mobility challenges: may want to stay in the End Court and throw their two balls consecutively as a strategy to not have them enter and exit the court unnecessarily.
This is a suggestion given the time limit, not a rule.
Impartiality
Remember that a Referee is to remain impartial during the game. No coaching from the sidelines.
Check out the News section "The Referee's Motto" for more info.
What about the Scorekeeper? No impartiality is needed from the scorekeeper as long as they are not the referee as well.
The Scorekeeper can cheer all they want.

Do you have a rule that needs more explanation? Email us at lopbocceball@gmail.com and we'll get it added to this page

LOP Bocce Ball Courts FAQ

There appear to be inconsistent rolling patterns on our newly upgraded courts. What gives?

The upgraded courts are new and this is to be expected. We will know more after a full set of seasons: Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Why can’t you add more ‘infill’ and vibra-plate it into the turf?

Infill is used to increase the speed of the courts, not to level the surface. Vibra-plating is then done to compact the in-fill into the turf. Adding infill would not decrease the rolling variations.

How do you know?

We have a great relationship with our Turf company. They have been there for us through the upgrade and provided us with much information and education.

What else have you learned from the Turf company?

The accuracy of a roll is determined by the underlying surface that the turf is applied to.

What underlying surface is below our courts?

In our case, we have “pervious concrete”. Pervious concrete is not typically smooth.

It is made of a formula that does not use sand. It has the end appearance of a dimpled surface. Pervious concrete was selected by the LOP Operations Manager, the Concrete Company and the LOP Volunteer Contractor because of the unique need to provide a considerable amount of drainage.

Why was Pervious Concrete chosen for our courts?

Our courts do not sit on the surface of the surrounding ground. Our courts are sunken. Early on it was decided that keeping our existing curbs would save $25-30 thousand dollars. Going forward the above named managers had to come up with an acceptable way to install enough drainage into the courts to withstand a wet winter. Otherwise, we would have standing water in the courts.

So the Pervious Concrete is to blame?

Not entirely. The variations that have been observed are partially related to the sub surface and other natural factors associated outdoor court construction. Remember that the courts are new and only a few months old. We need to give them time to acclimate. Other natural factors that may affect our courts in years to come include: settling, erosion, and maybe even seismic activity. The Board will be monitoring the courts throughout this Bocce season as well as in-between seasons. We will inspect and test the courts next Spring to determine if additional infill is needed.

Why wouldn't additional infill be needed?

Our Turf company has advised us to avoid adding any additional “infill” at this point. There are tiny-drilled-holes in the turf that allow water to drain. Adding too much infill may “clog” these holes and decrease drainage. After we get some rain and the courts dry, if it’s determined that they are slower than desirable, then it would be a good time to consider more infill and vibra-plating.

How can we help?

There are many ways to help. Here are a few:

• Stay off the courts unless you’re playing or reffing. Use the walkways along the sides.

• Avoid food and drinks on the courts. Water is OK, but we don’t know how a spilled beer or margarita will affect the turf and infill.

• If playing Bocce with children, teach them to respect the courts with the info above.

What if I have more questions?

You can email your questions or comments to: lopbocceball@gmail.com

Anything else we should know?

It’s just a game. We will have some great throws and some bad throws. An exceptional bocce throw is based on accuracy, speed and adjusting to court variations. If you hear a bocce player talk about “reading the court” they are modifying their next throw given a court variation. Try it!

Have fun. Enjoy your fellow teammates and opponents.

“Enjoy life while it is happening”

Richard Evans

COURT RESERVATIONS

Last update: 11/16/22

In order to allow for additional play time, match play times will increase to 80 minutes (1 hour, 20 minutes).

This will still leave a 10-minute break in between the match start times to allow for the Captains to collaborate on their rosters, referee assignments, and coin toss.

The new play times will allow for the third game to either begin or finish, thus allowing for additional wins and points to go toward a team's standings.

Last update: 05/28/23

In order to align with National Bocce scoring and the updated play times, new scoring rules will be in effect beginning with the 2023 season.

Team standings will be based on the following criteria: Games Won. Any ties will be broken with the total points scored.

Match: consists of 3 games, played to 9 points. (third game is limited by time).

Match Time: 1 hour 20-minute time limit. You can finish the current frame if it started prior to the 1-hour 20-minute limit.

In most cases, Games 1 and 2 are completed. See below for Game 3 scoring examples

Game 3 Scoring Examples:

Scenario 1: Game 3 is incomplete.
Team A has 3 points, Team B has 1 point.
Team A is recorded as "game won" and "points scored" are recorded for both teams.

Scenario 2: Game 3 has not started
The game will be considered null. 0 wins and 0 points.

Scenario 3: Game 3 Tied
Game3 tied. Each team will have their “points scored" added to their standings with no team earning a “win”. 0 win + points

Switch Ends: No player may play two consecutive games from the same end of the court.

Captains: Both must sign the scoresheet and are equally responsible for turning in the scores to the designated receptacle on the Bocce Ball Shed.

Winning Captain must email scores to LOPBocceball@gmail.com

  • Bocce is the third most popular sport in the world, after soccer and golf.
  • Bocce in its current form was played as early as 264 B.C. in Rome. No one really knows how old bocce is, but stone balls dating back to 9000 B.C. have been found in Turkey.
  • 25 million people in the U.S. alone play bocce.
  • Notable bocce players have included the Roman Emperor Augustus, the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates and the astronomer Galileo.
  • George Washington built a bocce court at Mount Vernon in the 1780s.
  • The pallino must cross the middle of the court in order for the game to start. If not, it must be rethrown, or given to the other team to throw.
  • A bocci is considered dead (or “morte” in Italian) when it hits the back wall. The bocci is removed from play and not allowed to be rethrown.
  • A game is typically played to 12 points in the U.S., though some games can go to 15 or 21 points.
  • The surface of a bocce court can be composed of stone dust, dirt, clay, grass or an artificial material.
  • Regulation bocce courts are 91 feet long by 13 feet long, and variations are acceptable if foul lines, mid-court lines and inbound markers are designated.

To uphold fairness and transparency within our bocce ball league, we have established a comprehensive forfeiture verification process involving both the team that initiated the forfeiture and the opposing team. This procedure serves to maintain the accuracy of forfeiture reports and foster a strong spirit of sportsmanship within our league.

The following steps delineate the forfeiture verification protocol:

For Teams Initiating Forfeiture:

1. Notification of Opposing Team and League Scorekeeper: It is incumbent upon the team captain declaring a forfeiture to promptly contact and inform the opposing team's captain. This communication is vital to ensure that the opposing team does not arrive at the court, only to find it vacant. Additionally, the captain declaring the forfeiture should also notify the league's scorekeeper at Lopbocceball@gmail.com of the forfeiture.

For Teams Not Notified of a Forfeit:

1. Initial Report: In the event a team believes their opponent has forfeited a match, the team captain or an assigned representative should swiftly report the forfeiture to the league's scorekeeper at Lopbocceball@gmail.com. This report should encompass critical information such as the date, time, and location of the match, along with the reason for the forfeiture, if known.

2. Confirmation by the Opposing Team: Upon receiving a forfeiture report, the league will reach out to the opposing team to ascertain the accuracy of the forfeiture claim. The opposing team will be allotted a specific timeframe to respond to the league's inquiry.

3. Scorekeeper Review: The league's scorekeeper will meticulously review all submitted information to determine the legitimacy of the forfeiture claim. This review process will be conducted impartially and in strict adherence to league rules and regulations.

4. Announcement: Following the completion of the verification process, the scorekeeper will promptly update the scores on the league's website.

By implementing this rigorous verification process, our league is committed to ensuring that all forfeitures are thoroughly evaluated, thereby preserving the integrity of our competition. We earnestly encourage all teams to embrace the principles of fair play and mutual respect, both on and off the bocce ball court. Your active cooperation in this verification procedure is immensely valued and contributes significantly to the overall success of our league.
